Common mistakes to avoid in Class 9 Science
Science questions often include options that seem
reasonable at first glance. Reading carefully and
understanding the relationship between cause and effect
can help distinguish a scientifically correct answer from
an option that merely sounds familiar.
Memorising definitions without understanding them
Knowing the definition of inertia, evaporation or an
isotope is useful, but exam-style questions may present an
example rather than ask for the definition directly.
Practise recognising the concept when it appears in a new
situation.
Confusing heat with temperature
Temperature describes the thermal state of a substance,
while heat refers to energy transferred because of a
temperature difference. The two ideas are related but are
not interchangeable.
Treating force as necessary for continuous motion
Newton's first law explains that an object can continue in
uniform motion without a net force. A net force is required
to change the state of motion, not simply to maintain it.
Mixing up atomic number and mass number
Atomic number represents the number of protons in the
nucleus. Mass number represents the total number of
protons and neutrons. Confusing these two values can lead
to incorrect conclusions about atoms and isotopes.
Ignoring units in numerical questions
Science calculations should always be interpreted together
with their units. A numerical value without the correct
unit may not represent the physical quantity being asked
for.
